Labradorite Gems cabochons from Orissa Gems ,

Labradorite ((CaNa)(AlSi)4O8) is a calcium-enriched feldspar mineral first identified in Labrador, Canada, which can display an iridescent effect (schiller).

Labradorite is an intermediate to calcic member of the plagioclase series. It has an anorthite percentage (%An) of between 50 and 70. The specific gravity ranges from 2.68 to 2.72. The streak is white, like most silicates. The refractive index ranges from 1.559 to 1.573 and twinning is common. As with all plagioclase members, the crystal system is triclinic, and three directions of cleavage are present, two of which are nearly at right angles and are more obvious, being of good to perfect quality (while the third direction is poor). It occurs as clear, white to gray, blocky to lath shaped grains in common mafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro, as well as in anorthosites.

Labradorite is a naturally dark-colored, semi-precious gemstone from the Feldspar mineral family that exhibits some brilliant internal flashes (called Labradorescence) of peacock blue, coppery red, pale green and gold when light reflects over its surface.

The feldspar which usually displays the Labradorite appearance is Plagioclases, though the effect is some times seen in orthoclase: hence kinds of as "Plagioclases Labradorite"

The geological type area for Labradorite is Paul's Island near the town of Nain in Labrador, Canada. It has also been reported in Poland, Norway, Finland and various other locations worldwide, with notable distribution in Madagascar, China, Australia, Slovakia and the United States.

Labradorite occurs in mafic igneous rocks and is the feldspar variety most common in basalt and gabbro. The uncommon anorthosite bodies are composed almost entirely of Labradorite. It also is found in metamorphic amphibolites and as a detrital

component of some sediments. Common mineral associates in igneous rocks include olivinepyroxenesamphiboles and magnetite

Several mines in Oregon produce transparent orange, yellow, red, blue, green, and clear Labradorite without labradorescence. These can be cut into very nice faceted stones. Some of this material has platy inclusions of copper in a common alignment that can produce an aventurescent flash when played in the light. These materials are marketed under the name "Oregon Sunstone" and have attracted a strong following from local designers and the tourist trade.

Labradorite is a stone for cleansing and maintaining the enteric body (aura) in good condition. It symbolizes both moon and sun, assisting with transition from one phase of life to another, and helping with the recognition thereof. It helps to provide clarity to the subconscious mind, and helps one to implement the inner messages to the real world.
The color of labradorite is regarded by some as extra terrestrial in origin, and is believed to contain some of that outer space vibes in its flaming spectral coloring, providing for enhanced “galactic” derived insight in meditation, and day-to-day life. It has qualities as a bridge between inner and outer worlds of oneself, and between the earth and outer space. As a stone for meditation, labradorite works great as a calming stone.
Labradorite has been used in treating mental disorders, and to enhance the various body functions like digestion, metabolism, and eyesight. It is believed the flaming color display of labradorite assists with eyesight problems.
